MICHAEL COSTOLO GALLERY

Much of my work is done in the town forests and other public lands in and around southern New Hampshire. These lands are small hidden gems often surrounded by rapid development as the population of the area is rapidly growing. Aside from my own personal enjoyment of these places, raising awareness of their existence so they are not lost to development is one of the goals of my photography. I am often surprised to find people who aren't aware of the unspoiled nature so close to their own back yards. Without public use, they will quickly be lost forever.

I have a particular attraction to film as a medium. There is just something about looking at slides on a light table or making black and white prints from negatives that I find very appealing. Recently I have started more large format work. The equipment is heavy and bulky, and takes time to set up and use, but the output is worth all the effort. Already a student of both the camera and the negative, I am now working with the traditional wet process of making black and white prints. Silver gelatin on paper is a wonderfully simple, yet powerful, way to exercise one's creativity and express one's feelings to share with others.

I have begun to explore printing on handcoated silver gelatin emulsions on art papers. Each print is unique because of the nature of the handcoating process. Making a print is rather more labor intensive than using boxed paper, but I believe that the craftsmanship that goes into it is worth the results.

Prints are, of course, for sale. I also develop traditional B&W film and make custom silver gelatin prints from your negatives. Please contact me with questions or for more information.
