DAN STONE GALLERY

My interest in photography began as a teenager growing up in central Massachusetts. I was fascinated by the texture of old wood and spent many weekend afternoons driving the back roads in search of weathered barns and gnarled trees. I felt that color was a distraction to the shapes and textures, and concentrated on black and white to capture the essence of what I saw.

Time constraints and lack of darkroom access resulted in a 15 year hiatus from black and white photography. During that time I did more color work, particularly when traveling or mountain climbing, some of which was published in calendars, magazines, and as book covers. About ten years ago I rekindled my passion for black and white expression and returned to traditional darkroom work. For most of my black and white photography I use a medium format film camera.

I’ve always been interested in the interplay of light and shadow and once again find myself searching for form, this time frequently near my East Lexington home. Recently I have devoted considerable attention to the Great Meadows and Arlington Reservoir regions. I enjoy taking the same walks repeatedly, as the light and conditions are different each time, and with every walk I see something new. My work has been exhibited in Arlington, Lexington, Waltham, Lincoln, Lowell, and Worcester.
